A little bit better and a little bit not. That is how I would describe this week's training. There were moments that seemed to be going better than they had during the last couple of weeks. Unfortunately, there were also things that proved challenging and were just a tad "off" from where I'd like them to be. This was a week of navigating those obstacles while still celebrating the parts that went well.
Enjoy this week's training recap below! And be sure to head on over to @imhaileymorgan on Instagram to see this week's Reel. There may even be a couple seconds of dog footage in it, which makes it worth the watch.
Best wishes!

Prescribed Workout: 16 miles @ easy pace (7:22-8:21/mi)
Distance: 16 miles
Time: 2:06:00
Avg. Pace: 7:53/mi
Route: treadmill + 2mi w/ Maple
Rating: 4 out of 5
Summary: My long run went really well today. I kept the pace controlled and focused on feeling relaxed. The miles flew by without any issues, which was refreshing after the last few treadmill runs I have had. At least the treadmill didn't get unplugged this week! After the first 14 miles, I took Maple outside to run the final 2 miles. In true Maple fashion, she LOVED it.
Monday - May 6th, 2024
Prescribed Workout: 6 miles @ easy pace (7:22-8:21/mi)
Distance: 6 miles
Time: 50:38
Avg. Pace: 8:26/mi
Route: outside + 1mi w/ Maple
Rating: 3 out of 5
Summary: Today's run was average. It wasn't particuarly good or bad. My legs appreciated the slower pace of today's run. I tried to take it slower in preparation for tomorrow's speed workout.

Prescribed Workout: 10 mile speed workout
Workout Description: 2mi wu + 11 x 800m @ 6:06/mi w/ 1:00 rest + 2mi cd
Distance: 10 miles
Time: 1:13:42
Avg. Pace: 7:22/mi
Location: treadmill + 2mi w/ Maple
Rating: 5 out of 5
Summary: I know, I know, I say this a lot, but I was intimidated by the paces of this speed workout. When I realized that this workout included a total of five and a half miles of running at approximately 6:06/mi pace, I wasn't sure that I was ready for that. It turns out that I was not only ready for that pace, but I was also ready to go even faster. I ran the final repeat at 5:56/mi, and while it was challening, I felt in control the entire time. Don't get me wrong, I was ready to be done by the time this run was over. It was an adequate challenge and left me feeling ready for more in the future.
Here are my splits:
Warmup: 9:05/mi
Repeats 1-10: 6:03/mi
Repeat 11: 5:56/mi
Cooldown: 8:49/mi avg
Wednesday - May 8th, 2024

Distance: 11 miles
Time: 1:39:34
Avg. Pace: 9:03/mi
Route: outside + 2mi w/ Maple
Rating: 3 out of 5
Summary: I made my run into a “runventure” today. After yesterday’s speed workout, I decided to focus on keeping the pace easy and enjoying my surroundings. I wound my way through new streets and explored places that I haven’t been before. It was a fun way to spend 11 miles in the sunshine.
Thursday - May 9th, 2024
Prescribed Workout: 5 miles @ easy pace (7:22-8:21/mi)
Distance: 5 miles
Time: 42:01
Avg. Pace: 8:24/mi
Route: outside + 1mi w/ Maple
Rating: 3 out of 5
Summary: Today I was only planning on running 4 miles, but I ended up getting a bonus mile. I was meandering through new roads and in true “me” fashion, I got distracted and ended up further away from home than I planned. Oh well. It’s all about the journey! Maple joined me for the final mile and we had a wonderful time together.
Friday - May 10th, 2024
Prescribed Workout: 22mi long run
Distance: 6.30 miles
Time: 45:20
Avg. Pace: 7:12/mi
Route: treadmill
Rating: 2 out of 5
Summary: I got on the treadmill this morning with the intention of running my 22 mile long run workout. Instead, I ended up with 6.30 miles and a sore knee. I really contemplated pushing through and finishing this run, but then I realized that I was potentially risking my entire training cycle. I opted to call it, rest for the next couple of days, and run this workout on Tuesday instead. The last thing I want to do is injure myself right before the taper and my race. It was hard to make this decision, for it deviates from my plan, but I do think that it was my wisest choice.
Saturday - May 11th, 2024
Prescribed Workout: active recovery
Activity: walk with two adorable dogs on the beach
Summary: My knee still felt a bit off this morning, so I decided to take a rest day. We took the dogs on a long beach walk and it was absolutely lovely.
Overview
Training Phase: Competition Phase
Training Block: Peak Fitness
Total Distance: 54.30 miles
Summary: I enjoyed this week of training as much as I could. It didn't go perfectly, but I am doing my best to take deep breaths and make the wisest decisions I can. It is all about being strategic in the moment so as to preserve my health and fitness in the long run. It's not about each individual run. Rather, it is about the entire training cycle as a whole. I want to show up to race day with a healthy body, confidence in my fitness, and unwavering determination in the pursuit of my goals.
Highs: 1) exploration while running
Lows: 1) having a bit of soreness in my knee
Things that went well: 1) keeping obstacles in perspective so that I can make strategic decisions
Things that I will be altering in the future: 1) recommitting myself to stretching every day (this fell apart when I became immersed in house projects over the past couple of weeks)
